Takanori Tomita's Japanese Tips - Feb.2005
Topic: How To Write Numbers In Japanese
Issued by DSFY.com - http://www.dsfy.com

================================================

Hi

This is Takanori Tomita from DSFY.com

The topic for today's monthly special newsletter is How To Write Numbers in Japanese, and you are going to extend your knowledge of Japanese by seeing some of the example of Japanese Number Symbols

Writing Numbers (1,2, 3. . . ) in Japanese
Like any other countries, we use both the arabic numbers (1,2,3,4,5 . ) and our own Japanese number system with Kanji Script.
Of course, we can use either Hiragana or Katakana script to write numbers, but it is not appropriate way of writing numbers in Japanese.

To count numbers up to 10 in Japanese, we say:

1 - Ichi
2 - Ni
3 - Sun
4 - Shi
5 - Go
6 - Roku
7 - NaNa
8 - Hachi
9 - Kyu
10 - Jyu

To write numbers up to 10 in Japanese Kanji, we write:

1 - 5 numbers
6 - 10 numbers

How about numbers after 10?
Like Kanji componds which were talked about in the last newsletter, numbers after 10 are made up with the combination of the Kanji numbers 1 - 10.
So, for example, if you want to write 15, we use the kanji number of 10 and 5.

If it is 25, what do you think it is going to be?
That's right, we use the kanji number of 2, 10 and 5.

How about numbers after 100?
The numbers after 100 must use extra Japanese symbol for each place.
Today, I am going to show you up to 100000 numbers in Japanese symbols.

100

10000

1000

100000

By the way, today's sample of kanji numbers are created with some
graphic design features with the Traditional Japanese Calligraphty fonts called "E Do Ryu".
It is often used for representing old, traditional Japanese writing.
