Numbers (1,2, 3. . . ) in Japanese
Like any other countries, we use both
the arabic numbers (1,2,3,4,5 . ) and
our own Japanese number system with
Kanji Script.
Of course, we can use either Hiragana
or Katakana script to write numbers,
but it is not appropriate way of writing
numbers in Japanese.
To count numbers up to 10 in Japanese,
we say:
1 - Ichi
2 - Ni
3 - Sun
4 - Shi
5 - Go
6 - Roku
7 - NaNa
8 - Hachi
9 - Kyu
10 - Jyu
To write numbers up to 10 in Japanese
Kanji, we write:
How
about numbers after 10?
Like Kanji
componds which were talked about
in the last newsletter, numbers after
10 are made up with the combination
of the Kanji numbers 1 - 10.
So, for example, if you want to write
15, we use the kanji number of 10 and
5.
If it is 25, what do you think it is
going to be?
That's right, we use the kanji number
of 2, 10 and 5.
How
about numbers after 100?
The numbers after 100 must use extra
Japanese symbol for each place.
