===================================

Hi, everyone

This is Takanori Tomita from DSFY.com
Thank you for reading my newsletter.

[How to Read in Japanese]
Did you know Kanji symbols have more one reading?
There are basically 2 types of kanji reading:

1: Kunyomi
2: Onyomi

[Kunyomi - reading]
Kunyomi is used for reading a Kanji character, either
noun or as an adjective or verb stem.
It is really reading Chinese characters in the Japanese way,
because kanji is historically came from China.

[Onyomi - reading]
Onyomi is used for reading Kanji words or when kanji is
part of sentence or phrase.
It is to use the Chinese style reading of a character.

[This example gives you a clear idea]
Kunyomi is original Japanese reading, and Onyomi is basically
taken from the Chinese kanji-reading style and conveyed to Japan.
For example, the kanji character for "Big" will be ‘å.
(If you cannot see this character, go to view, encoding and Click Japanese)

1: Kunyomi: OO, OOki
2: Onyomi: Da, Dai

You see the difference?

[When writing your name in Japanese]
In Japanese, Western people's names are normally
written using the Phonetic, and
is usually with katakana Japanese Script.
However, the majority of Westerners prefer their
names in Japanese Kanji.
So, is it possible to write your name in Japanese kanji?
Yes, it is.
Although some Westerners' names have unusual
pronunciations and is not always suitable for Kanji,
those names are going to be translated by the closest
to the actual pronunciation.
With phonetic translation, Onyomi is usually used.
