How To Write Enlish names in Japanese?

When English names are translated into Japanese, we usually use either the Katakana Translation or phonetic translation. With the Katakana translation, you can only used 1 Script.
But, with the phonetic translation, you can the Kanji Script.

But, let me fist explain about the Japanese phonetic system.
The example phonetic system of Japanese Language is:

  • a as in "Mather"
  • i as in "keen"
  • u as in "cute"
  • e as in "egg"
  • o as in "coach"

And, this can be written with the Japanese scripts like this:

Hiragana Script: A I U E O
Hiragana

Katakana Script: A I U E O
Katakana

Now, unlike the Hiragana and Katakana script, there are many kanji characters which have got the exactly the same sound. So, with the kanji script, you can write A I U E O sound in many ways.
Here are 2 examples: Both of them have A I U E O sound, but just different characters are used.

Kanji A I U E O
Kanji A I U E O

Now, for those of you who are not sure about the difference between these 3 scripts, I suggest you to read my FREE SPECIAL REPORT. The information will help you get to grips with reading and writing the basic Japanese symbols.

Over 1,000 people in many countries have asked us to translate a word or name in Japanese symbols, because they don't want to get WRONG Japanese symbols. So, if you don't know the difference of the scripts, simply Click here and I'll send you a free report we've made that tells you the basics of Japanese scripts.

So, the question is

Which Script is used to write your name in Japanese?

It depends on what you want to achieve with your Japanese Name symbols.
I have found that many Western people prefer kanji script, because it simply looks good, but also have the meaning of each character, although the whole name don't really have literal meaning like English name (e.g. Hill).

There are basically different ways of translating names in Japanese.

  1. Kana Translation
The majory of Japanese people will use this method to write English names in Japanese.
That is to use the Katakana script, as Katakana is used to represent foreign names and foreign names in Japanese. So, if you go to Japan, you will see McDonalds written in Katakan, not Kanji or Hiragana.

    McDonalds <<- McDonalds in Japanese

  2. Phonetic Translation
The phonetic translation combines kanji characters whose sounds are basically the same as English names. No meaning as a whole name, only considering the pronunciation.
But, sometimes, each Kanji character has got the meaning.
The following example of "Anna" on the top left hand side has got a kanji character of "peaceful" amd the kanji character of "green"

<< - We can write "Anna" 4 different ways by using 4 different Kanji characters. As you can see, we can even swap the character each other and make it "Anna" in Japanese.

Like the example of A I U E O Kanji symbols shown, you can mix or even swap the kanji chracters as long as they occupy similar positions in thier compounds.
